Diabetes Alphabet Soup - What is DSMES and who is a CDCES®?

Learn about one of the best ways to show people with diabetes and members of your healthcare team about your commitment to quality diabetes care and education. This session will provide information about what it takes to become a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist® (CDCES)®, formerly known as the CDE credential. Learn about the eligibility requirements for initial certification, ways to prepare for the exam, and the renewal process.


Becky Sulik, RDN, CDCES, LDN, Director of Education, Rocky Mountain Diabetes Center, Pocatello, Idaho, directs patient education and support activities, including patient education,diabetes device training, outcomes collection, and assisting with clinical research trials. She is also active in working with payors to enhance reimbursement for diabetes and other nutrition services. She also works with clients/patients with disordered eating. Becky has worked as a registered dietitian and diabetes care and education specialist for nearly 25 years. She currently serves as the Chair of the CBDCE Board of Directors. Other activities include serving on advisory boards, patient advocacy groups, and as a clinical research coordinator.


Sheryl Traficano, MBA, CAE, is CEO of the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education, headquartered in Illinois. Sheryl received her M.B.A. from Keller Graduate School of Management, DeVry University and holds the Certified Association Executive credential. CBDCE administers a national multidisciplinary certification program for health professionals who specialize in diabetes care and education. The program, created in 1986, has just under 20,000 active certificants. Sheryl’s been with CBDCE since 2000 becoming CEO in 2013. Past positions included working for the Emergency Nurses Association and serving in executive roles with various smaller dermatology associations via a subsidiary of the American Academy of Dermatology. She currently serves on the Institute for Credentialing Excellence's Public Member Work Group and as a Director on the American Board of Nursing Specialties, as well as serving as the public member on the Elgin Community College’s Advisory Group for the Physical Therapy Assistant Program, Elgin, IL and on the Board of Trustees for the Immanuel Lutheran Church, East Dundee, IL.
